Jasper Francis Cropsey
Born on Staten Island, New York, Jasper Cropsey became a nationally known luminist landscape painter whose work reflects his interest in architecture and allegorical progression, seasons, etc. Called "America's painter of autumn", he was especially known for his sunlit-ridden fall landscapes. Reportedly the peak of his career was the creation of a "nine-foot-long canvas of a New York autumn. Its brilliant colors stunned many of the English viewers to whom it was presented in London." (Zellman 202) His painting, Autumn on the Hudson River, was so well received in England that Queen Victoria granted him an audience. Cropsey had early success, being acclaimed by the press when he was in his twenties. He was trained in architecture, having been apprenticed to an architect when he was age 15, but he turned to landscape painting, which was then gaining acceptance. He was an admirer of landscape painter Thomas Cole and used Cole's Roman studio when studying in Italy from 1847-49. Although Cole was deceased by then, Cropsey adopted Cole's colorful palette and romantic treatment of subject matter. He lived most of his life at Hastings-on-Hudson, overlooking the Hudson River and traveled and painted extensively in the river valley. However, from 1856 to 1863, he lived in England where the influence of Frederic E. Church replaced Cole. Source: Michael David Zellman, 300 Years of American Art

Frederick Dickinson Williams was born into a patrician household in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation and until 1874, Williams taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874. Williams and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris. George Inness, one of America's foremost landscape painters of the late nineteenth century, was born in 1825 near Newburgh, New York. He spent most of his childhood in Newark, New Jersey. He was apprenticed to an engraving firm until 1843, when he studied art in New York with Regis Gignoux, a landscape painter from whom he learned the classical styles and techniques of the Old Masters. In 1851, sponsored by a patron, Inness made a fifteen-month trip to Italy. In 1853 he traveled to France, where he discovered Barbizon landscape painting, leading him to adopt a style that used looser, sketchier brushwork and more open compositions, emphasizing the expressive qualities of nature. After working in New York from 1854 to 1859, he moved to Medfield, Massachusetts, and four years later to New Jersey, where through a fellow painter he began to experiment with using glazes that would allow him to fill his compositions with subtle effects of light. The big, open blue sky is stacked with the colors of the sunset against the horizon, calling to mind a Rothko or the other great color field painters who achieve mood and depth from singular color. About the work: Painter Jane Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river, and earth. Being less concerned with documenting specific scenes, Bloodgood-Abrams is focused on capturing nature’s essence, “the deeply profound moments, where there is a connection to a vital energy.” Her process begins with being in nature, where she allows the emotional energy of the landscape to filter through her psyche. The memory is then translated onto canvas after being worked over a period of time with layers of paint that is applied, wiped away, and reworked. The result is a radiantly dramatic remembrance of Bloodgood-Abram’s encounter with “something beyond everyday life”. The artist’s final hope is for these images to evoke remembrances within the viewer's own personal relationship with nature. Artist Biography: Jane Bloodgood Abrams was born in Queens, New York.
